Wardrobe Picks No. 5

I thought I’d break up the SATC posts with my wardrobe picks from last week.

Monday, burgundy lace top, grey pants, burgundy patent heels (Connie) and Mystic Fire Topaz jewelry. I think this outfit looks a little big on me, honestly. I like the color combo though.

Tuesday, Natural linen jacket/top, brown pants

My new Guess heels

Venetian Glass heart necklace and earrings (a Christmas gift from Eric a couple of years ago).

I think the only things I needed to complete my outfit were these..

Wednesday, Black and white polka dot top, black skirt, red heels

Brighton heart necklace

Thursday, Green sweater and pinstripe pants with black Nine West heels

Charm necklace

Friday, turquoise sweater with black pants and black Nine West heels, Chanel earrings.

By Friday I was out of ideas and tired, so the Friday outfit was nothing spectacular. I think these black pants are a little on the short side, unfortunately…not sure why – they are the same size as my other pants.

New Purchase: Ready for Summer

In honor of summer (and being able to bring in the bucks) I thought I’d do a little shopping this weekend. Since I just got all those new shoes, I didn’t splurge too much this past weekend, but I found a few little things.

I wanted some new nail polish in some bright, summery shades. Last winter, a co-worker turned me on to Essie polish. I have always been an OPI girl, but she made some great suggestions on color and raved about Essie’s quality. So, I gave it a shot over the winter and loved it. I thought I’d try some more colors from their line.

I ended up with…

Escapades from their new summer line

Guilty Pleasures also from their new summer line.

And Style.Berry which I understand the proceeds benefit Dress for Success.

I also went by Target and picked up this bracelet, which I’d seen in their ad last week.

It’s, of course, reminiscent of Jessica Kagan Cushman’s bracelets (or the Chanel copies of the Cushman bracelets).  Like these…

And, I thought I’d give this product a try…

I’m mainly wanting to get my legs looking a little less pasty white for summer. Just add a little color. So far, I love how this works!

Wardrobe Picks No. 4

Wardrobe picks for this week at work, and a bonus!

Metallic top, burgundy pants, new Connie heels.

Worn with Mystic Topaz jewelry.

Lavender top, striped black and white linen pants, Nine West heels.

Worn with silver and white Summit set.

White top, black belt, black pinstripe pants, new Guess ombre heels.

Worn with red beaded necklace.

Green tank, white cardigan, snakeskin belt, grey pants, white ankle boots. This outfit was not quite as successful as I had hoped for, but it wasn’t too bad. I feel pretty good about trying out my white boots (or as Eric calls them, my Whitesnake boots).

Worn with Chanel earrings and standard silver jewelery (watch, Brighton bracelet, James Avery ring).
Red top, black skirt, Madden Girl red and black heels.

Worn with tri-color gold circle necklace and earrings (no photo). I love how this outfit turned out. Simple, but I got a lot of compliments.
And since I ended up going out to lunch with a girlfriend on Saturday, I thought I’d share that outfit with you too…
White top, new jeans (in a smaller size!), Steve Madden heels

Worn with turquoise shell necklace, silver hoop earrings and white purse.

Love these shoes – they’re so fun, they make me think of Nantucket. Especially since Eric calls this red Nantucket red.

And, I decided I would be brave, step outside my box, and start photographing the outfits on me. It’s hard to get a sense of how they look when they’re laying on the floor. I’d love to wait until I was skinny to do this, but you know you only live once and you can’t spend your life waiting for things to happen!

New Purchase: Shoes & Purse

I’ve been wanting to replace some of the shoes I recently got rid of, as well as purchase some new ones. Eric agreed that as soon as I received my first paycheck from the new job, shoe shopping would commence. I have to say that I’ve never 1) bought so many new shoes at one time, and 2) had so many nice pairs of shoes. So, here’s what I got…

Nine West Mary Janes (a girl’s gotta have a pair of Mary Janes) (Hurry Up in black)
Circa Joan & David (DJ Roosevelt in ivory patent and black)
Guess (Keegan in Red Multi) These are ombre and go from a deep dark red to a bright red at the toe. They are so sexy and just gorgeous!!!
Steve Madden (P-Skyla in Red Fabric)
Guess (Lewia in natural multi fabric and brown patent)
Madden Girl (Ceesee in red and black patent)
Connie (Beau in berry patent) These are really more burgundy than the sort of ruby color they look in the pic
And, I wanted a new black purse for everyday. I found this great one by Guess.

I am still in need of a pair of black booties for the fall/winter, and a pair of white heels. I didn’t find any white ones I liked, and of course the booties will have to wait a little until they are in season. I’d love to add more color too, particularly a pair of blue heels. Also on my list of wants are a pair of grey heels (possibly suede for fall), a pair of metallic heels and a pair of t-strap heels. I’ll have to keep my eye out. But, I’m so pleased with my purchases and feel rather spoiled.

The White Ankle Boot Conundrum

Of course, like a lot of other women out there I have the SATC movie on the brain. You also, of course, know that I’ve been trying to be a little more daring with my wardrobe, bringing the bar up a notch. So, when you combine those two things, all hell breaks loose.

I have many new purchases to share, but for right now I wanted to discuss an item that has been in my closet for a couple of years (maybe three) and has never been worn. I am speaking, you may have guessed, about a pair of white ankle boots. Eric bought them for me when we were shopping for shoes for me to wear on our cruise to the Bahamas. They were so comfortable when I tried them on in the store, that I didn’t argue when he bought them. But, I’ve never quite figured out how to wear them without them looking all 1980s on me. I suppose if I don’t wear them with acid washed jeans and an off-the-shoulder shirt (a la Flashdance), I’m good. But, still…I haven’t quite figured out how to work them into my wardrobe.
So, two things have ocurred that have changed my thought process on them. First, I went to see SATC (post on that to come later), and of course noticed Carrie’s white ankle boots in the film. And secondly, in my new job I am feeling a little more daring with my fashion choices, because no one knows me here. Perhaps it should really be a time when I am trying to be toned down, but I am feeling like being a little risky in my choices – at least to the extent of trying out some new things. If they don’t work, they don’t work.
So, basically Carrie pairs her boots with short skirts or mini dresses. I’ve even included a photo from Season 6 where the boots make an appearance. Since mine are taller than these, they probably won’t work in quite the same way.
Of course, the white boots with pajama pants is always an option (not).
So, I’m thinking it’s summer and I’ll give it a go and see how it works. I’d love to pair them with a skirt but I don’t think I’m quite that daring, so I’ll have to settle for pants. Just need to figure out the details, but I think I’ll try it. Why not?

Mine look like this…

Wardrobe Picks No. 3

I thought I’d share some of my wardrobe picks from last week with you. As you may imagine, I’m starting to “recycle” some outfits, so there’s no need to show them again. So, this week I only have four to show you. On Monday I wore my green sweater and Viper shoes (love love that outfit).

Tuesday, I wore my new shirt and red top with my Nine West heels.
I came across this necklace in my accessories over the weekend, and decided it would work perfectly with this outfit.
Wednesday I went to New Hire Orientation. I chose to wear my purple shirt, black pants and black ankle-strap kitten-heel shoes. Oh, and a patent headband.
I paired it with my sterling silver earrings Eric bought me over the weekend at the Native American festival we attended in Oklahoma City. They’re feathers.
Thursday I chose a new top purchased over the weekend (on sale!). I paired it with brown pants and my brown Mizrahi heels.
Gold jewelry to go with (gold hoops and my gold tassel bracelet).
And finally, Friday…I chose a white top, black pinstripe pants and my pink and black peep toe heels (that Eric bought for me a few years ago). I received compliments for the shoes on Friday, which was nice.
I added my pink pearl and diamond pendant and earrings (gifts from Eric) to complete the outfit.
Not a bad week…looking back I think I need to get away from colors that are more suited for fall (like the dark purple with black pants), and go for brighter and lighter for summer. I enjoyed each outfit I wore this week though. I felt good about myself in them.
Now, here’s what threw me for a bit of a loop this week. At orientation, we were enlighted about the company dress code. Even knowing that this is a conservative company, I didn’t anticipate any surprises here. But, nonetheless, I was surprised. Many (if not most) of the women I see here at the office are wearing suits. Nothing fancy, or exciting, just plain suits. I have tried to gauge my office appropriateness based on women close to my own age rather than those that are much older. I would say that the younger women are wearing clothing that is slightly more casual than a suit, but certainly not in the realm of the “business casual” ideal that was followed at my former place of business. So, while I find myself on perhaps the lower end of the scale as far as how professional I appear, I believe I am within the range of what is appropriate. The dress code, aside from listing the obvious items that are not allowed (jeans, sweats, flip flops, mini skirts, etc.) also spells out that sleeveless tops are not allowed. I’ve worn a couple of sleeveless tops already, and while one of them was probably too casual, the other one I think was fine. But, perhaps I should invest in a good jacket in order to keep up appearances, and wear over my sleeveless top. The big thing though, that got me was the shoe guidelines. Here it is in a nutshells…mules are allowed, but only if they are closed toe, peep toes are allowed, but only with a pump (closed) back. No slingbacks on open toes. No strappy sandals. Frankly, I think in this day and age, this policy is a little (a lot, perhaps) outdated. The woman leading our orientation was expounding on the need for professional attire, while she was wearing basically something like this.
Shoes that I would consider to be one step shy of sneakers or crocs. Not professional in my book. And how can you say that what she was wearing was professional, but a pair suit and a pair of strappy heels are not (or peep toe slingbacks for that matter)? Makes no sense to me. I’ll continue to keep my eyes open and try to get a feel for how the dress code really works here, and report back. Until then, I’ll probably play it on the safe side for now.

A Little Something for the Guys

With Father’s Day upon us, I thought perhaps it was timely to do a post on fashion and gifts for men.

Recently, Eric took me to a local menswear store he really likes that is family-owned by a fellow Italian. While we were there, I picked out a new shirt for him.

Of course, he needed cufflinks for the shirt too. Both the shirt and the cufflinks are by Angelino.

My thought on the shirt was that it would look really hot with a pair of jeans for going out. Like this…
Possibly a pair of jeans like these from Rock & Republic.

I can’t wait to take him out and show him off! Of course, while we were at the store, he had his eye on this suit.

We’ll save that for another day. But, in the meantime one of the men’s magazines recommended a few grooming items that every man should have in his Dopp Kit. I thought they might make good gifts, and we all know there are some men that need a little help. Although not mine, he takes great pride in his grooming and being well-dressed….just ask him, he’ll tell you!

So here is what they recommended…

Wardrobe Picks No. 2

Another week at work, and I tried to mix it up a bit more this week. I also tried to get better photos of the accessories, too.
New top with linen skirt and Ralph Lauren heels.
Worn with Mystic Fire Topaz pendant and ring.
Green sweater with polka dot skirt and headband and black wedge heels.
Polka dot top with black knee-length skirt and purple heels. I just love these shoes, they’re so fun. I have a pair in black as well.
Worn with custom hand-made blown glass bead earrings.
Green sweater with white pinstripe pants and Nine West heels. These were the first pair of heels I bought when I started wearing heels again. They are still favorites!
Worn with green-hued pearls.
My DWP-inspired outfit. Black and white dress with gold necklace. Black heels.
So, what did I learn this week…well, I probably shouldn’t have worn polka dots back to back. I think I did much better at mixing up the types of outfits for more variety. I also learned that I should take a look at my style inspiration, and put together more outfits that way – I think the Friday outfit was a huge success!!

The Devil Wears Prada – Wish I Did

Over the weekend I managed to slip in some much-needed relaxation time on Sunday. I decided to pop in my Devil Wears Prada DVD. I so enjoyed this film the first time I saw it, which was in the theatre, although I have not (as yet) read the book. I loved the clothing that the revamped Andy wore in the film, so I thought I’d highlight a few of my favorites here. Of course, don’t miss the great post Fabsugar did too!

Here’s a little collage of several of the outfits she wore.

You know I love this green. A very Audrey Hepburn look, with the sunglasses.

I am not hugely fond of the newsboy cap look, but I love the off-the-shoulder sweater with the white blouse beneath and the long Chanel necklace.

Of course, the olive dress is a favorite too. I think I am definitely going to have to invest in some metallic heels. A co-worker had on a pair of fabulous heels last week…I’ll try to find a photo.

Here’s another black and white. I have a dress similar to this one, so I need to pull it out of the closet and take it out for a spin. Love the long gold necklace with it.

And along with the beautiful coat here, I love the t-strap sandals. I’ve got to get a pair of those! (Ok, I think this “review” is turning into more of a wishlist, huh?!)

I’ve always been interested in fashion, and also in costume design, so when the two meet in a film like this…I am hooked! I am anxiously awaiting this weekend when I will see Sex and the City. I’ll definitely have to do a breakdown of the outfits for that as well. Thank God for Patricia Field.

Until next time…

Wardrobe Picks – First Week of Work

First week back at work (well, four days, since we had a holiday on Monday). I thought I’d share what I chose to wear. Like I mentioned, I am trying to step up my wardrobe, and my style, so I thought that by documenting what I’m choosing, it might help me to put a little more thought into what I’m wearing as well as it might help me to see if I’m getting stuck in a rut wearing the same things over and over. This is also my first attempt at photographing my outfits too, so I’ll have to learn as I go along. I wish that my accessories showed up better. I may have to rethink how I’m laying things out, so that I can focus in a little more on the details.

So, for Tuesday…blue top, black pinstrip pants, black kitten-heel mules and a gold/silver/pearl necklace.

For Wednesday: green top, grey pants, Gianni Bini Viper heels, and green glass and gold necklace.

For Thursday: Pink and white stripe top, brown pants, brown Isaac Mizrahi croc heels, and diamond and gold necklace.

For Friday: red top, black pants, red striped mules and Venetian glass heart necklace.

So, the first thing I noticed looking back is that I wore pants everyday. I think I need to mix it up a little bit with skirts and dresses. I also think that all the tops I wore were very similar, so I need to keep an eye on that as well. But, all in all I felt great and I think I looked pretty good. I have a few ideas for next week, so we’ll see how I do.
