Playlist: Makeup Obsessed

Lately, I find myself reading beauty blogs and following Instagram accounts like make__up__madness and thebeautyacct.  I’m lusting over shadow palettes and brush sets.  So, I thought I’d share a few of my recent purchases.  The palette above; however, is a great palette from Coastal Scents that I’ve had forever.  And clearly, I love looking at it more than actually using it.

I seem to have the biggest makeup dilemma when it comes to mascara.  I do love the Kat Von D mascara, and have been using that for some time now.  But, when I ran out of that I’ve been working my way through a series of samples.  Every time I get a choice of a mascara sample to get with my points I go for it.  I’m pretty impressed with the They’re Real! mascara.  This one is definitely worth getting in a standard size the next time I’m in the market.  Still a few samples to go, though.

I’ve never ordered from Too Faced Cosmetics before, but when I saw their Sugar Pop shadow palette, I had to have it.  I have to say, my experience ordering directly from Too Faced was fantastic.  Quick service, and look it comes in a pretty pink box!

Even the inside is filled with pink packing material!  See, seriously, how could I resist those macarons!

I love the tin itself.  It’s bright, it’s fun, it has macarons as well.  I literally clapped my hands with excitement when I opened the box!

And here’s the palette itself.  It comes with a little guide for three different looks.  Plus, they’ve laid out the colors to make it super easy to coordinate.  And the colors are fantastic.  I’ve used all of them and I love the pigmentation.  I will definitely be getting more Too Faced products in the future!

Obviously, my shadow palette was a little bit out of my normal color range, but I’m so glad it is.  Recently, I’ve done a lot of stepping outside my comfort zone colorwise.  An online group I belong to full of other makeup obsessed ladies has been enabling me like nobody’s business.  They were directly responsible for the Too Faced palette, and also for my Urban Decay eyeliner habit.  They kept talking about the Asphyxia liner so much that I had to pick one up on my last Ulta spree.  I’ve used it several times and love it.  I’m finding the need for a whole drawer full of UD liners.  As you can see, I also brought home a new OPI polish.  This is Shine for Me from the Fifty Shades of Grey collection.  It’s so pretty on.

And then, I decided to spread the love and place a Sephora order too.  I’d recently found out that they still had the limited edition Urban Decay nail polish in stock after one of my polish divas ordered it.  When they released these, I opted for Addiction which was a gunmetal grey that I fell in love with similar to Chanel’s Graphite.  But, then later I saw a friend wearing Vice and lamented not buying it when I had the chance.  But lo and behold, Sephora still has it online!  So, Vice was mine finally.  I also decided to order a new lipstick, because who doesn’t need a new lipstick every once in awhile?  After seeing some of the publicity around Kat Von D’s unaplogetically named Underage Red, I decided a bright red lipstick that I couldn’t say no to.  And for my free samples, I chose a couple of perfumes (I’ve been wanting to try some Elizabeth & James) and a Smashbox Photo Finish primer.  Very happy with my loot!

And finally, I had to share the new perfumes Eric gifted me with.  D&G Light Blue and Thierry Muegler’s Alien Essence Absolue.  The Light Blue is perfect for summer, and the Alien is perfect for nighttime or fall/winter.  It’s a spicier and woodier, which I love in a heavier fragrance.  I’m still wanting to add to my perfume selection though…all in due time.

Winter White

Some things I’m loving…

Winter, and January especially, is all about white or hushed tones and a bit of sparkle.  I have to share something I’d been coveting forever, and finally treated myself to, in December.

This is the Shoshanna Amulet from BaubleBar.  I love love love this necklace so much.  I bought it specifically for our holiday party, but I have worn it all throughout December and January and I’m sure it’s going to be on repeat throughout the rest of this season.

I’ve also been in a huge organizing mode, and one of the things that’s really drawing my focus is my makeup storage.  What I have now isn’t working for me, and I’ve basically used the same storage/organization for years.  I’ve spent some time on Pinterest looking at some different options and I think I have some good ideas to get started with it.

My jewelry organization is definitely in need of a good overhaul too, and I’ve been eyeing this Pottery Barn large jewelry box as a great option.

Of course, the other thing that’s been getting my attention is our home.  The Christmas decorations are packed away and the house is back to normal.  I love love love all the seasonal decorating that fills our home, but come January I am ready for it to be tranquil, peaceful, quiet.  And all that energy of the new year is swirling around, so I’ve been adjusting some things, moving a few things around, organizing our books…those sorts of things.  It feels good.  And while the rest of the year, I am all about color – in January, I long for whites and neutrals.  The trend of turning books with their pages facing out absolutely fills that need right now – plus, I love this photo.

And I’m very excited for the release of the next Cupcakes and Cashmere book, aren’t you?

And of course, I can’t overlook my absolute adoration of the white winter coat.  I want to trade in my black wool coat for something brighter.

Or maybe the palest of pinks?  Loving the pairing with white skinnies too.

And lastly, I had to share…I did something sweet for myself and bought some white peonies for an arrangement next to the bed.  They’ve already made me very happy.  They make me feel very decadent.

January 2014 in Photos

January was mostly full of preparing for my Paris trip.  Eric gave me a gorgeous Kelly Moore camera bag (my first camera bag!) for Christmas.  I had a few shopping trips to pick up shoes, PJs, etc.  I even bought a gorgeous tangerine trench to wear!  I made sure to keep up with my cardio at the gym to prep for all that walking we’d be doing.  I even picked the perfect polish to wear.

I finished reading the last of the Stieg Larsson books (so good) and started a new to me series.

Eric made a fabulous King cake to enjoy for Epiphany.

I’m absolutely enamored with the Dracula tv series, and the sets are stunning.  I look forward to this show every week and it never disappoints.

November in Photos

Nov in Photos

November started off with a bang!  The first Saturday I attended a book signing for Christina Lauren for their latest book in the Beautiful series – Beautiful Player.  I’ll have a post up soon on the series and the book signing too, but I finished Beautiful Player shortly after getting it at the signing!  And speaking of books, I also got to go see Catching Fire the night it came out in the theatre – loved it!

I spent some time during the month looking at my in progress craft projects, working on some, and planning for some new things.  One of my big projects towards the end of the month was working on finishing some Christmas ornaments I’d stitched.

Of course, one of the things I was excited about was visiting a local camera store and checking out a variety of camera bags in preparation for my trip to Germany/Paris.  I loved the bright yellow of the one in the photo, but I ended up going with something slightly different.  Post to come on that as well and why I chose what I did.

As the holidays approached, I celebrated with a super blingy manicure – I used my new polish, When Monkeys Fly, over a gold I already had on hand and wowza!!  Eric and I made apple pancakes for breakfast, which is our tradition for Thanksgiving morning, and then watched the parade.  We went to my mom’s for our cozy Thanksgiving dinner and it was really a nice, relaxing day.  So much to be thankful for!

August in Photos

August in Photos

I always feel that my birthday and then Labor Day signal the end of summer – marking the change from longer days and saturated color to cooler weather and wardrobe layering.  Even though I’m sure we’ll have many more 100 degree days in front of us, my thoughts immediately turn to the new season.  And judging by the number of Pumpkin Spice Latte pics I’m seeing on Instagram, I’m not alone in this.

August is, of course, my birthday month and it brought with it a much-needed vacation from work and time to get together with friends.  I’m still enjoying breaking out some statement jewelry pieces, which has been great fun.  I was also treated to some new nail polish, new (much needed) perfume, and a blow out.  I even made it to the gym again.

I finished reading City of Glass and moved right into City of Fallen Angels – both so good.  I’ll have a review of this series up soon.  One of my birthday outings was getting together with a friend to see the Mortal Instruments movie on opening night.  So good.  So much love for Jace.  Go see it if you haven’t yet.  I’m looking forward to reading the fifth book.

I also spent an afternoon with another friend and we met for lunch at Bluebonnet Bakery, which was absolutely delicious.  I had their famous chicken salad sandwich and then we both topped off our lunch with a slice of Italian Cream Cake.  To. Die. For.  I haven’t had Italian Cream Cake that good since last April!

For my birthday, Eric bought me new perfume.  As I’d mentioned on this post, I was in dire need of some new perfume.  I ended up with D&G Light Blue for a lighter, summery scent and Thierry Mugler’s Alien Essence Absolue for my deeper fall/winter scent.  I love them both!  He also took me out to dinner at Ziziki’s, which I just can’t stay away from for my birthday dinner.  Everything there is absolutely delicious.  I had the first glass of wine I’ve had in awhile, I can’t go wrong with a Riesling and this one was fabulous!

We also hit a milestone with Ramses and Thutmose.  We decided that they were finally old enough that our Moroccan pouf would be safe to put out again.  It has been locked away almost since we bought it, so it’s nice to actually have it out in the living room again.  If we can get to a place where the other kitty-proof measures can be done away with I’ll finally be able to share our living room redo.

August was a good month, and I had a wonderful vacation and birthday.  Exciting things are on the horizon for my new year!

July in Photos

This summer is just zooming by like nobody’s business.  Frankly, July was a rough month.  Started out fine but then it took a nosedive.  My crazy work schedule took over again and a lot of late nights left me feeling overwhelmed and stressed.  Near the end of the month I made some adjustments in my attitude and did my best to start looking at things from a place of gratitude and abundance.  Amazing what a difference that makes.  Two things that have really helped me are the IG posts from @tarotandtea, particularly her daily tarot advice, and Katie O’Keefe’s blog and IG.  I’m loving watching her moving through #intentionalaugust and #mth (making things happen).  Both are two roads to the same destination, a destination of re-engaging with myself and what means most to me.  All a work in progress, but I’m feeling a lot better equipped to deal with the “stuff” that’s going on in my life right now.

So, what adventures did I get up to in July?  It was so nice to have a long weekend for 4th of July, and you can see I celebrated with a fun mani.  I spent a day with some girlfriends over that weekend too – I even baked cookies!  Eric and I opted to not go out to see fireworks, but instead we enjoyed the evening at home and watched some of the specials on tv.

We had lots of rain in July and it actually made for a much cooler summer than we’re used to in Texas.  I love it when it rains, so it’s always a little bonus.

As part of my attitude adjustment, I spent some extra time on myself – nails (of course), some new makeup (eyeliner and powder), dug out my favorite summertime heels (don’t those cherries kill you?), and some summery statement necklaces like my starfish that jingle!  I even went through all the lipstick I have hoarded in my purse.  Amazing what you find in there.

I had a little bit of relaxation time that I spent working on a gift for my Goddaughter (a summery yellow quilt) and catching up on my DVR’d shows, namely the red carpet from the Oscars.  Yes, it was in February.

Eric and I also did something for ourselves, we finally ordered our frame for the photo we printed from our honeymoon so we could hang it over our bed.  The frame is perfect and goes beautifully with the warm tones of the sunset from the top of the Spanish Steps in Rome.  Apologies for the reflection/glare in the photo…but trust me it looks wonderful.  And it allowed us to mark our bedroom as complete on our home improvement list.

So that was July, and we’re already halfway through August so I’d better start thinking about my August in Photos post!

March in Photos

March in Photos

Something crazy has been going on with my blog and/or WordPress over the past week.  I keep trying to come in and do a new blog post and haven’t been able to!  So, finally here is March in photos.

March was kind of a month of indulgences.  Between the Mozartkugeln from Germany, the yummy homemade pizza, a good book and some nail polish, I was kind of on a roll!  Really, I think a good part of it was a bit of escapism from some stuff that hasn’t been so fun to deal with this month.

One of the best things this month was going to the Dallas Quilt Show with a friend.  I haven’t been to the quilt show in years, and it was such a fabulous day full of inspiration and even a little shopping.  And the inspiration hasn’t left yet.  I’ve been itching to sew!!  Once I finished my Kate Spain quilt in February, I was dying to get back to my Kiss Kiss quilt.  In March, I managed to get all of the cutting finished and also got all of my pieced blocks sewn together.  Next up is starting to assemble the rows.  I can’t wait to see this beauty come together!  And I finished up a hexy pincushion for a friend’s birthday and sent it on its way.  And a beautiful little thank you card came in the mail for the birthday gift I’d sent to another friend last month.  Isn’t that little bird with the blue and white bowls adorable?

Some days it really started to feel like Spring, and the trees were blooming with glorious color.  But we keep getting days of temps dipping back into the 30s and 40s, so I indulged in a little Mexican hot chocolate in the evening.

In family life, my boys are getting so big!  They are a year old and we are feeling so fortunate to have them in our lives.  Their daily shenanigans really keep us on our toes!!  In June it will mark one year that we’ve had them, which I find hard to believe!!

As always, I appreciate you stopping by!  I’m really enjoying sharing some of what’s going on in my world here.

January in Pictures

January 2013

For 2013 I thought it would be fun to start a new tradition at the end of each month and share some photos from the previous month – just as a little look back into my days.

January was definitely a month for refocusing and it seemed to spark my creativity too, since I spent a lot of time working on some crafty projects.  I took a day off work at the beginning of the month to spend with Eric and my niece and go see the Trains at Northpark.  We, of course, had to stop for gelato.  Work has been extra difficult this month, so there were several nights I came home in need of comfort food – like the grilled cheese sandwich Eric made for me.  I did try to take time for myself though, by leaving early one Friday afternoon and going to the quilt shop to pick up my Hex on the Beach kit and a few fabrics I fell in love with.  And we even had snow!  Last Saturday morning I had a couple of hours to kill between my hair appointment and my eyebrow appointment, and I spent that time curled up in a comfy chair, sipping Starbucks and reading.  Decadent!

My last mani of the month was the perfect transition into February – Essie All Tied Up with an accent nail of OPI Berry Berry Broadway.

Looking forward to seeing what February brings!

Things I Love Thursday: Bond, James Bond

james-bond-skyfall
It’s possible, and very likely, that I’ve mentioned my love of James Bond before. So much so that Eric and I recreated a tasty cocktail in honor of Casino Royale.  I grew up watching James Bond films.  The first one my parents introduced me to was Thunderball.  Both of my parents loved Bond movies, and I became instantly enamored with them.  My dad even took me to look at Aston Martins one weekend, so that I could appreciate Bond’s (classic) vehicle of choice in person.  Over the years, there have been many Bonds, some better than others, but I am a particular fan of Daniel Craig as 007.  I love his slightly rough around the edges Bond.

Over the holidays I had the great fortune to get to see Skyfall with a dear friend.  There really is nothing better than seeing a Bond film with a fellow fan.  And I can’t get the Adele theme out of my head.  Perfect choice for the film.  And even better, in honor of the film and the 50th anniversary of Bond, OPI released a gorgeous new polish collection.  How could I resist?

And I especially love the Skyfall polish that appeared in the film.  Gorgeous color.

opi-skyfall
Of course you know I couldn’t resist adding some of the Bond polishes (I WANT THEM ALL!) to my collection.  A friend of mine treated me to a set of four of the OPI minis from the collection, and Goldeneye just begged to be first.

I did treat myself to two of the full-size polishes from the collection.  I fell in love with this one, The World is Not Enough.  This is such an interesting color, sometimes grey sometimes pink.  Love it!  (This one was also one of the minis in the four-pack)

It was even a good companion to my red cup!

The next one I tried out was the other full-size polish I purchased, You Only Live Twice.  I did also do a pedicure with this polish, so I got to doubly enjoy it.  This is a gorgeous cherry pink that really was the perfect color for that film’s representation.  I really hated to take this one off.

But, I replaced it with another mini – The Spy Who Loved Me.  Which is a gorgeous red and the perfect polish for our Cocktail and Dessert holiday party.

The only one I have left to try on is Live and Let Die.  It’s the last of the four minis.  Maybe that will have to be my next manicure?  I’d really like to invest in some more of the full size polishes from this collection – they really are all stunning.  I especially want Skyfall, Tomorrow Never Dies, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.  But I seriously would love to have them all!  Even the Man With the Golden Gun 18k gold flake.

I’d intended to watch Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace back at the beginning of November while on a little trip I took, but that never materialized.  I’d wanted to see them again before seeing Skyfall, so I’ll just have to settle for watching them now and rewatching Skyfall when it is released on DVD.

Things I Love Thursday: butter London Polish

It’s that time again!  And since I seem to be overindulging in the introspective soul searching posts lately, I thought I’d focus on something a little more fun for my TILT post.  For Fashion Week, one of my favorite new polish brands introduced a couple of new colors.  This one is called Fish Wife.  So in love.  I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.  The other is called Posh Bird, which I am definitely needing as well!  But before I get ahead of myself with the new fall colors, I thought I’d better show you what I indulged in over the summer!

I’d been wanting to try out butter London polish, and so when they had their 3 for $30 sale on the site, I couldn’t pass it up.  I ended up with from left to right: No More Waity Katie, Disco Biscuit and Lillibet’s Jubilee.  I had so much fun wearing these, over a period of three weeks in August.

Here’s NMWK…it’s a gray with purple microglitter.  Love it!!

Then I wore Lillibet’s Jubilee, that was a Limited Edition for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  This is a silvery lavender that is absolutely gorgeous in person.  I couldn’t stop looking at my nails.

And I saved the best for last.  I saved Disco Biscuit to wear for my birthday week, as you’ve already seen.  Disco Biscuit really is a must-have color (not just for the name).  It’s a bright pink with blue microglitter.  And it. is. awesome.

And just when I thought I’d have to wait for another good sale for some more bL indulgence, a friend of mine gifted me with this for my birthday.

That’s Dosh, pictured with the scarf she knitted for me from appropriately named yarn in “Zombie BBQ”.  Love love love this for fall.  Dosh is really stunning in person, it’s got a little bit of gold in it and it’s the perfect autumn olive green – like a pumpkin stem!  Love this.  I hated to take it off, frankly.

I was a good girl and passed up the Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale at Ulta on butter London polish last week.  Although it killed me to do so.  But, I really wanted to get Fish Wife and Posh Bird and neither were available through Ulta.  So, I passed.  Maybe next time, though!

What other good things are going on this week?

★ The temps are a little cooler this week and I’m loving it

★ Friday night Eric and I went and had Lebanese food (more on that later!) – yum

★ Drinking wine from Vampire Vineyards – love that Eric bought this

★ I did some major magazine purging on Saturday

★ Bought some new tops Saturday too – love what I got!

★ I spent some time sewing this weekend, which was much needed

★ I feel like I’m starting to feel settled again

★ Eric opening the curtains in the living room – with the weather lower than 1,000 degrees we can let in the light!
