Playlist: Winter White

Winter White

Some things I’m loving…

Winter, and January especially, is all about white or hushed tones and a bit of sparkle.  I have to share something I’d been coveting forever, and finally treated myself to, in December.

This is the Shoshanna Amulet from BaubleBar.  I love love love this necklace so much.  I bought it specifically for our holiday party, but I have worn it all throughout December and January and I’m sure it’s going to be on repeat throughout the rest of this season.

I’ve also been in a huge organizing mode, and one of the things that’s really drawing my focus is my makeup storage.  What I have now isn’t working for me, and I’ve basically used the same storage/organization for years.  I’ve spent some time on Pinterest looking at some different options and I think I have some good ideas to get started with it.

My jewelry organization is definitely in need of a good overhaul too, and I’ve been eyeing this Pottery Barn large jewelry box as a great option.

Of course, the other thing that’s been getting my attention is our home.  The Christmas decorations are packed away and the house is back to normal.  I love love love all the seasonal decorating that fills our home, but come January I am ready for it to be tranquil, peaceful, quiet.  And all that energy of the new year is swirling around, so I’ve been adjusting some things, moving a few things around, organizing our books…those sorts of things.  It feels good.  And while the rest of the year, I am all about color – in January, I long for whites and neutrals.  The trend of turning books with their pages facing out absolutely fills that need right now – plus, I love this photo.

And I’m very excited for the release of the next Cupcakes and Cashmere book, aren’t you?

And of course, I can’t overlook my absolute adoration of the white winter coat.  I want to trade in my black wool coat for something brighter.

My style idol agrees…

Or maybe the palest of pinks?  Loving the pairing with white skinnies too.

And lastly, I had to share…I did something sweet for myself and bought some white peonies for an arrangement next to the bed.  They’ve already made me very happy.  They make me feel very decadent.

What’s on your playlist this week?

Things I Love Thursday: New York Fashion Week

NYFW has come and gone once again.  It’s been so fun this season to not only see the pics of the shows pop up on Instagram, but also to see the live streaming from the site.  Almost felt like I was right there, except that there were no fun parties or photos of my daily outfits.  The big trend that I saw was lots of pops of neon.  In fact the Lulu Frost presentation was called Neon Baroque – a fun spin on a modern Marie Antoinette.

Lulu Frost Neon Baroque

Can’t get enough of those amazing statement necklaces and of course the long tutus were a perfect combo with the fitted corset.  I may need more neon in my life.  I read in a magazine not too long ago that it’s fun to pair bright nails with darker fall/winter outfits – not only does it make that pop of color so much more striking but it also brings a bit of brightness into those overcast grey days.

One of the first shows I streamed was the Marissa Webb runway.  I absolutely loved the lines of the clothes – very geometric.  Plus the combo with leather was fab.

Marissa Webb NYFW 1

This black dress was one of my favorites.  Not overly dramatic from the front, although I love that leather corset.

Marissa Webb NYFW 2

No, the big draw for me was the back.  Just that extra bit of interest.  Almost leaning to harness rather than corset.  I love this look.

There were also plenty of bright and flowy in the mix, like this gorgeous orange floral from Rebecca Minkoff.  So delicate and oh the movement from the fabric was stunning.  Notice also that braids played a big part in NYFW this year.

More braids – and I love the very modern patterning from Nicole Miller.  It looks a bit like stained glass, but I love that the colored print is against a white background.  It makes me think of modern art like Cubism.  And the peplum just adds to the geometric shape of the dress.

Naeem Khan runway (braids!) took that patterning and detail to the next level.  Look at how rich this is.  And I love it in cocktail length.  That is one hot dress.

Rachel Zoe never disappoints.  Her pieces were very safari-inspired.  I fell completely in love with this little black and white number.  Rachel herself wore this for her show as well.  It’s got that same delicate flowiness to it that the Minkoff dresses have, but this one doesn’t have that sweet appeal to it.

Fashion Rachel Zoe Spring 2014

And while I mentioned braids were everywhere on the runway, Rachel Zoe really did it best with this deconstructed braid.  It was messy and wild – an untamed look to go with the pieces.

Kate Spade – you know I love me some Kate Spade – had some fun pieces for SS14.  I can’t get enough of this bright yellow especially the lemon-print dresses and skirts.  Love!  And take a quick peek at the mani – a little reverse French mani with a pop of neon pink.  So fun!

And along with all the runway shows and presentations, some of the most fun pics came from Instagram and the lovely ladies attending NYFW.  I had the great fortune of stumbling across Courtney Kerr’s Instagram, and immediately followed.  I watched her on Most Eligible Dallas and was happily surprised to see there’s a spinoff show coming soon on Bravo.  Love her, and especially could not get over this amaze t-shirt she wore at a Lulu Frost gathering.  I totally need this in my life – “You Can’t Sit With Us” t-shirt.

And since I’m behind on posting about NYFW, I’ve also been able to enjoy the shows from London, Paris and Milan FW.  My favorite at LFW was the Burberry Prorsum SS14 runway.  Talk about a beautiful show!  So happy to see that mint is still hot and look at all these gorgeous pastels – complete with rose petals for the finale.

Burberry Prorsum LFW

My absolutely favorite look from this show was the gorgeous jewel embellished skirts and trench.  I mean talk about sparkle!  I love how the circles of gems plays off the lace patterning.  Gorgeous!

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014

I also loved the black and white – it’s like polka dots but taking it one step further.

Burberry Prorsum LFW 2

And this sweater – I cannot get enough of this sweater.  Sweet and sexy with the bow and the open back.  There’s something about those details on the back that get me.

That’s all from me on Fashion Week…but oh what inspiration.  I love seeing how trends we’re seeing now are reinvented for next season.  S0 much fun!

Things I Love Thursday: Summertime Style

miu-miu-parrot sandals

Today is the last day of Spring, and tomorrow is the official first day of Summer.  Although here in Dallas it’s been in the 90s already, so it has felt like Summer for at least a few weeks.  Being a Summer baby (August), I love this time of year so I thought it was the perfect subject for a TILT post this week!

This morning I was perusing Instagram and saw a photo from alixcherry wearing these Miu Miu parrot sandals.  Gorgeous!  So perfectly summer.   I’m so in need of a new pair of sandals.

The one wardrobe essential every girl needs is a pair of well-worn pair of cutoffs.

I sure wish I could find my old (well-loved) pair.  They were my “studio” shorts that I seemed to live in throughout my ceramics, etching, and painting classes.  But, in lieu of those I did make myself a new pair of cutoffs last weekend.  They’re not quite “lived in” yet, but they’ll get there.  The other thing I love about cutoffs is that you can dress them up or down.

Style Within Reach Summertime Staples

Style Within Reach had a great photo on Instagram of her OOTD on Tuesday that’s a perfect example.  And bonus, it features another fab summer trend – lucite necklaces!

This one was from Glitter Guide’s IG/Tumblr – and it’s a gorgeous lucite statement piece from BaubleBar.  Same one Style Within Reach is wearing in her OOTD.  It’s fun, it’s funky, and it’s got an airier feel because of the lucite which is perfect for summer accessorizing.

And of course, I can’t forget another perfect summer trend – white polish.  I’ve been seeing it everywhere, but first noticed the look back during Fashion Week at Kate Spade’s SS show, white manis and pedis.

White polish

Love it.  In fact, I think white polish is in order for my next mani.  Can’t go wrong with that!  (and how much am I dying over Kim K’s evil eye bracelet??)

Feeling Fallish

I’m ready for fall.  It’s just barely September, and there’s always the question of whether or not to wear white after Labor Day.  But, even though it’s still over 100 degrees out, all I can think of is fall fashion.

I’m longing for tights and wearing layers…

New fall bags…

Coats and scarves and boots…

Playing with a new color palette…

Chunky accessories…

Shoes in plum suede…

Vampy nail colors and lipsticks…

Playing with pattern…

I think it’s time to start rearranging my closet and pulling out my fall essentials!  Here’s hoping cooler weather is on the way!

Bluebird of Happiness

Bluebird of Happiness

So much has been on my mind lately, and part of what has been on my mind is whether or not to share it publicly? My intention with this blog was to put myself out there, and share my thoughts, my journey, and my passion for all things beautiful and stylish – including design, fashion, art, travel, etc. My blog falls far short of some of the amazing design and fashion blogs out there, but in the end – this blog is all me. I don’t get a lot of traffic on this blog, which is perfectly fine with me. Yes, I would love to occasionally know that someone is reading and that what I had to say was worth putting out there publicly, but it’s not the reason I do this.

One of the things I’ve been struggling with a lot lately is not feeling like I measure up. Part of this is because I’m struggling with losing weight. I am making progress, but it is slow. I’ve touched on the topic before, I think, that I love fashion and really want to dress and present myself well but I run into a couple of obstacles with that. One being that since I am changing sizes, and won’t be in a certain size very long (hopefully), I don’t want to invest much in a transitional wardrobe. Second issue is that I don’t have the kind of budget I’d love to have for clothes and accessories that a lot of other people do. Granted, I have some nice pieces, but the majority of my wardrobe isn’t high quality. So, when presented with an obstacle like this, I tend to go into the mode of doing nothing. Which bothers me. I had gotten to a point in my life where my motto was “feel the fear and do it anyway”. Thus, the reason I started posting my “wardrobe picks” posts. But then I quit doing it for a variety of reasons explored here. I have contemplated even deleting the posts from my blog completely. But, then there’s a part of me that feels like once I reach my goal weight, those posts are probably going to be important to me as part of my journey. So, for now they stay. But, God, I hate seeing myself in photos sometimes. Guess it’s all the more reason to really put 110% into getting where I want to go.

I love love love reading other blogs that are witty and smart and where the blogger makes self-disclosures about their own journey. And when all that is paired with photos of their beautiful home/wardrobe/life I love it even more. Part of why I love it is because it gives me something to aim for, a little piece of “hey I want that in my life”. And there are a lot of people that hear or see things about my life and think that it’s perfect or that I have everything and am so lucky. But, although I am so grateful for almost every single part of my life right now, I still want to strive to make those parts that I am not so happy about better.

This past week has been filled with ups and downs. The ups being that I completed another 5K. And my completion time was six minutes faster than my last 5K. I am so proud of myself for that. A couple of the ladies on my team are planning on continuing our Saturday morning walking and we’ll see where that takes us. We walk 3 miles every Saturday, which is very rewarding and when I go to my weigh in afterwards I feel so light and full of energy, regardless of what the scale says. This past Saturday, the scale read a 3.4 pound loss, which I am ecstatic about! I hope that means that I am past my plateau and can move forward with more losses now. And, my walking partner is also a part of Weight Watchers and is a size or two smaller than me. She is going to bring me her clothes that she can no longer fit into because they will fit me. She didn’t get to wear them very long, so it’s like I’m getting new stuff for my closet! And it solves my temporary problem of not wanting to invest in transitional clothing.

So, anyway, it’s been a little rough the past few weeks and I’ve been feeling pretty overwhelmed with stuff going on in my little head plus feeling bad about the weight. But, I think things are turning around. So, I’m going to work on encouraging myself, celebrating my victories and “feeling the fear but doing it anyway”. And I’m going to continue to take my inspiration from here, here and here.

P.S. – sorry if this post was a little all over the place. But, hey, that’s how I roll.

Vintage Tattoo Style

Yesterday, the subject of tattoos came up in one of the groups I belong to so I thought I’d do a related post. Of course, after posting my new bikini in my last post and getting started on my 101 Things…I’ve got summer on the brain. The Ed Hardy brand by Christian Audigier has really brought back the use of vintage tattoo art into fashion, and in a much more mainstream way than has been seen previously. I love his pieces, including the Eternal Love bikini above. You may recognize this as having been worn by Heidi on The Hills. I’ve also mentioned the Ed Hardy sunglasses here, but I am still wanting a pair.
The Ed Hardy brand uses the typical tattoo iconography of roses, skulls, dragons, snakes, hearts, etc.
This type of tattoo art began as a sailor’s way of documenting the symbolism of a life at sea. The swallow for example, so prevalent in tattoo art, was a way to document that he had sailed over 5,000 nautical miles.
I just recently bought this swallow necklace for myself. Love it!

And you can find cool tattoo stuff at Sailor Jerry’s too. Check out this cool swallow bag.

And I’m loving the jewelry designs by this etsy artist.

Oh, and I can’t forget to show you one of my favorite halters…

Love it!
You can even find amazing retro dresses like the one above, made by Jezebelle. Here’s a closeup view of the fabric, which is also readily available by the yard.

Of course, no one can beat Kat von D for coolness factor.

She’s even designed a line for Sephora.

So, no excuses…now you can add a little vintage tattoo style into your life too!

Supercalifragisexy – SATC The Movie

Of course all my recent SATC posts have been leading up to a post about the movie itself. Everyone and their dog has reviewed and discussed the movie ad nauseum, but I thought I’d put my two cents in as well. I loved the film. A girlfriend and I decided to see it at a local Studio Movie Grill, so that we could order cocktails and appetizers to add to our movie-going experience. I dressed up for the afternoon, not super dressy, but heels, etc. I was shocked at how many women were there in Birkenstocks and the like. Maybe I am in the minority of women that dress up to go out? Especially for a movie that revolves around fashion, you’d think (at least I would think) that everyone would put a little extra care in what they were wearing. Not so much, it seems. Anyway, we had a fantastic time, and by the time I was finished with my first Lemontini, I was fully absorbed in the movie. Loved it!

Since the rundown of all the clothing and accessories from the film has already been overdone, I’ll just post some photos as a little scrapbook of fashion and inspiration!

Tory Burch mini dress and Monolo Sedarby Zebra-Print d’Orsay heels. Love these!
Of course they show up again later. I love them with the red dress.

I love Charlotte in the white dress and nude heels. Carrie’s outfit is fantastic. I love the pink shirt against the white pants and vest. I may have to pull this one as an inspiration outfit! Frankly, they all look amazing here, even Miranda.

This is a fabulous look as well, I love the combination of the dress, feather bag and nude heels.

Ferragamo Pheasant-Feather Bag Handbag

Manolo Blahnik Open-Toe Mary Jane shoes

Adding booties to my wish list.

I love that yellow with the gray too!

And I’ve already mentioned how I would love a white faux fur coat.

That studded belt shows up everywhere…I may need to find mine and start wearing it!

I can’t miss mentioning these…the Giuseppe Zanotti Crystal Fishbone Shoe that Samantha wore in her Valentine’s Day sushi scene.

The girls…

This was such a fun scene with Carrie trying on her outfits from the past.

And another fun scene…I’d love to go with girlfriends to Mexico!

I love the colors in that photo, that purple is fantastic!

One of my favorite outfits in the film was this one. I love the belted top with the grey skirt.

Proenza Schouler’s triple strap python studded heels. Of course, there is a waiting list now for these shoes!

This is another favorite outfit. I have a similar something I think I can pull together.

Dior Cut-Out Platform Sandals. These gladiator-style sandals are all the rage everywhere I turn right now. Most places I’ve checked are sold out of anything remotely similar. I, of course, have a pair on the way to me. When I first saw them I wasn’t overly excited by them…but the more I look at them, the more I began to want a pair. And, of course I need them for my inspiration outfit!

Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower Bag Handbag. Supposedly the one in the movie was embellished with Swarovski crystals and glitter. I love this nod to Paris from the last season.

And, see how much use she gets out of this same pair of shoes?!

I really do love that the same accessories are reused (in the series as well). It adds that element of what a real person would do, have something in their wardrobe that they use over and over again. Not all new, all the time. I like that. (See the shoes again!?)

Of course, no post on the movie would be complete without a photo of Carrie’s wedding dress. I wish that there were photos of the other dresses from the Vogue shoot out there on the web, but alas the web has been letting me down lately!

I can’t leave off without mentioning the star of the film…

Manolo Blahnik “Something Blue”.

I can’t wait for this to come out on DVD…I’d love to see it again. Stay tuned for some inspiration outfits, once my shoes arrive!

The Devil Wears Prada – Wish I Did

Over the weekend I managed to slip in some much-needed relaxation time on Sunday. I decided to pop in my Devil Wears Prada DVD. I so enjoyed this film the first time I saw it, which was in the theatre, although I have not (as yet) read the book. I loved the clothing that the revamped Andy wore in the film, so I thought I’d highlight a few of my favorites here. Of course, don’t miss the great post Fabsugar did too!

Here’s a little collage of several of the outfits she wore.

You know I love this green. A very Audrey Hepburn look, with the sunglasses.

I am not hugely fond of the newsboy cap look, but I love the off-the-shoulder sweater with the white blouse beneath and the long Chanel necklace.

Of course, the olive dress is a favorite too. I think I am definitely going to have to invest in some metallic heels. A co-worker had on a pair of fabulous heels last week…I’ll try to find a photo.

Here’s another black and white. I have a dress similar to this one, so I need to pull it out of the closet and take it out for a spin. Love the long gold necklace with it.

And along with the beautiful coat here, I love the t-strap sandals. I’ve got to get a pair of those! (Ok, I think this “review” is turning into more of a wishlist, huh?!)

I’ve always been interested in fashion, and also in costume design, so when the two meet in a film like this…I am hooked! I am anxiously awaiting this weekend when I will see Sex and the City. I’ll definitely have to do a breakdown of the outfits for that as well. Thank God for Patricia Field.

Until next time…

Green with Envy

The hot trend for Spring 08 is bright color, and no where is this more apparent than in the movies. The gorgeous green dress of Anne Boleyn in the one-sheet is amazing. But, of course, all the talk since winter has been about that green dress in Atonement.
When I saw the film with two girlfriends, I came away thinking it was the most depressing movie I’d seen in a long time, but that green dress was unforgettable. Just the sheer emerald green color of it in such a grey film was scintillating.
Just amazing.
I am so mesmerized by the simplicity of this dress, although it is actually quite complicated in its wraps and twists. But, that color – color in films is one of the things I so love about cinematography and costume design. It can just make a scene or a character.
And as I was contemplating and gathering my thoughts for this post, what should arrive on my doorstep but the InStyle color issue, with yet another green dress on the cover.

I think I will definitely have to add this color to my wardrobe immediately!

Style Inspiration – Jessica Alba

I love Jessica Alba’s style, and after recently re-watching both seasons of Dark Angel, I love her even more. She’s so fun and fresh-looking. Jessica has an everyday style in particular that I am really looking to for inspiration.

She always looks cute and put-together, in jeans and a t-shirt or in a summery dress (look at those bags!!)

I love the neutral tones in this outfit that compliment her complexion. I’ve been looking for a similar pair of heels in a caramel color.

The wooden bangles really make this outfit, as well as the grey heels.

Another casual outfit – her accesories seem to be what really pulls even the most casual outfit together.

For example – the turquoise she’s repeated in the scarf and the shoes.

I love the jacket that she’s paired here with the turquoise necklace. I recently bought a similar jacket to create the same look.

And of course, we can’t overlook her Oscar gown. The gold dress is amazing on her.

Jessica has a style that I aspire to, and this post is one I’ll refer back to numerous times, I’m sure.
